Faux Leather is the New Black

Within the wardrobe of every style maven lies a type of garment she keeps purchasing over and over again. For me, currently, I’m going bonkers over anything leatherette.

Faux leather (commonly known as pleather or artificial leather) is made of different polymers blended with genuine leather to create a leather-like material. The amount of polymers used determines the grade: the more polymers used, the lower the grade.

While some leather-like materials can last for years (with proper care) and were structured meticulously, it’s usually easy to differentiate between faux and the real deal. Faux leather will have a slight gloss, where real leather has a more matte, satin look. Authentic leather is soft while faux leather has a stiffness to it (because of the vinyl products used).

I have about 15-20 leather & leather-like garments combined. Trench coats, moto jackets, blouses, pants, skirts, and everything. The genuine leather was much more expensive and heavy duty (not always so great living in Florida), allowing me only to wear it during the later months of the year.  I wear my synthetic leather garments year-round as the material is more porous, and I can breathe in it.

Faux leather is the new black. I mean, usually, it really is ACTUALLY black with the exception of a few wine and plum colored options. But, the edginess of faux leather has the ability to elevate your all black ensemble to a newfound level of chic. Even while wearing all black, the coordinating black pleather skirt has the same qualities of a pop of color within your ensemble. Gotta love the risqué, the sexy, the swank, the dapper … that it adds to your style.
