Ceejaye's BeYOUty Corner: Your Time to Prime - #AllThingsBeYOUty

(Week 2)

Random intimate question: Would you ever work a full 8-hour day without a bra on? I know, it's a bit personal to ask of you when we're still in the “getting to know you” phase, but seriously … think about if you DID go bra-less, especially us “busty beauties". Imagine the jiggle, the possible sag, the high-beams ... well, you get the idea. Now, I’m sure you’re wondering, “WHY in the world is she talking about bras & boobs in a beauty post (I know you are, don’t front)?” I made that crazy analogy up because, just like you need proper foundation garments to wear an amazing outfit, your face needs to be properly primed to rock amazing makeup.

Primer does exactly as it's namesake. It prepares the face for makeup application. Primer is a layer that goes on AFTER moisturizer, and BEFORE foundation. It protects the skin from breakouts, sun, and the other elements that can come with heavy makeup use & daily exposure, and is frankly a non-negotiable in EVERY makeup kit. Allow me to elaborate.

There are two main kinds of makeup primers: Eyeshadow & Face.  Face primer smoothes areas that may have uneven texture. It also helps to slow down “melting” or “bleeding” of makeup throughout the day. Eye primer does all the previously mentioned, but in addition, helps prevent creasing. Much like foundation, primers come in a multitude of formulas & finishes. That means that you are almost guaranteed to find the best primers for your needs & skin type. Here is a lil' navigation on what primers you should be looking for based on your skin type:

Oily skin - Look for a MATTIFYING primer. They contain cornstarch, a key ingredient that will absorb trap and slow down oil secretion, aka “shiny” face throughout the day. (Try Sephora Collection Shine-Free Face Primer)

Dry Skin - The key word for you is HYDRATING. Water based primers are the best for your skin type for obvious reasons. In addition, a hydrating primer will help prevent dry spots from flaking under makeup. (Try Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer)

Combination Skin - PORE MINIMIZING & OIL FREE primers are the way to go. Combination skin tends to have larger pores in the drier spots and on cheeks. Pore minimizing primers will fill in all of those areas, and because its oil-free, will also aid in slowing down shiny face. (Try NARS Pro-Prime)

Wildcard: Milk of Magnesia. YES ladies, used in conjunction with your primer, Milk of Magnesia WILL prevent your makeup from budging, and is suitable for all skin types, but it is NOT for daily use. It should only be used on top of moisturizers, NEVER on bare dry skin. Use it when wearing makeup for an extended period of time (8 hours plus). With a cotton ball, apply a THIN layer on the face. If you see any white patches, or feel tightness you’ve used way too much.

Again ladies, SAMPLE before making the commitment. There is a primer on the market by almost every cosmetic brand, and finding the right one for you can be a process, much like finding the best foundation. However, the hunt is worth the effort, especially when you’re snapping that 5PM selfie featuring the flawless face you applied at 8AM. No need to thank me, your hashtag of #AllThingsBeYOUty will do the job just as well ;)
