There’s just something about red lips that makes EVERY woman look like a knock out. It’s bold, it’s striking. and not for the shy or timid. However, as much as we love red lipstick there are a few steps that go into getting the look just right. Whether you’re a lipstick junkie,  or are stepping out and trying something new, here is a basic guide of everything you need to know for the perfect red lip.

Make a Choice

• Decide on which kind of finish you are looking to achieve: Matte (no shine), Natural Sheen (slight shine) or Gloss (High Shine).
• Choose your product. There are traditional lipsticks, stains, tube gloss, and lip crayon. Know that if you get a lip crayon, you’ll also have to get a sharpener that fits that size.

Tone it out

•  The shade of red that works for you is CRUCIAL. The wrong shade of red lip will have you going from bombshell, to busted.  For warmer (lighter) skin tones, go with a red with orange-yellow undertones (Think OCC Cosmetics “Psycho - true blood red). For cool (brown) skin tones, you’re looking for a red with blue-purple undertones (Think SMASHBOX Be Legendary Lipstick - Infrared Matte)

Commit This Part to Memory

 No matter what color lipstick you wear, You must exfoliate & hydrate. Lipstick can be a bit drying, and nothing ruins a good lip color like dry, flaky skin. Once a week, exfoliate lips  at night with a sugar scrub (brown sugar & coconut oil is what I use). Double that if you’re a smoker. After exfoliation, slather on some of the best emollient lip balm you’ve got to keep your newly soft lips hydrated all night.

To really make the color pop on your lips, line just outside of your lip line with concealer and blend well. Adding just a touch of cover up will not only give a contrast between your red lips and your skin, it’ll also create a barrier for color so that the lipstick won’t bleed.
